Feb 16, 2010 – Mommies Go Green & Save Money with Children’s Consignment Sales
What’s a mommy’s secret to success in tough times? Sharing, trading, swapping and shopping with other mommies, of course! Across the nation, savvy moms are going ga-ga for children’s seasonal consignment sales. And with some mommies making hundreds of dollars each season by recycling their children’s clothing and toys, it’s no wonder that new sales are popping up across the US.
Years ago, groups of mommies would gather together and trade their “hand me downs” with each other. Today, there are websites, barcode systems, twitter feeds and even seasonal sale franchises to manage the growing network of savvy shoppers. Sales range in size from small church sales with 20 or so sellers to huge “Super Sales” that boast thousands of consignors and warehouses full of gently used clothing and toys.
In the fall of 2009 consignment organizers saw a huge surge of mommies interested in the new movement. Why? “It’s finally ‘cool’ to be thrifty.” says ConsignmentMommies.com founder, Chrissy Freeman. “Add one part recession, one part green movement and sprinkle in stylish budget conscious moms and consignment sales have a recipe for success.”
The biggest challenge with sales has been knowing the when, where and “Is it worth it?” The answer? Freeman has created ConsignmentMommies.com, a new social network and directory that offers tools & advice about seasonal consignment sales. Freeman started the site in 2009 after becoming a sale addict herself. “I was totally skeptical when my mom furnished her “grandma nursery” with consignment sale finds. Then, I went to my first sale. And my second. And I was addicted.”
ConsignmentMommies.com is the “baby” of mother-daughter team Chrissy Freeman and Shari Kilgariff. And it is growing. Fast. During the peak of the 2009 season, the site received thousands of pageviews each day with listings in just two markets. As the spring season approaches, the site is receiving an average of 20-30 new sale listings each day.
