During 2009, parents and grandparents have been looking for gifts which will benefit their children. The emphasis has been on presents to keep kids active, encourage an interest in their environment or help them to learn a new skill. Sales of children’s gardening tools, games for the garden, baking sets, tricycles and mini-beast life cycle sets have reflected this.
The best innovative products have also sold well with the fabulous Head Chef kids cooking utensils topping the list. Each of the utensils has bendy arms and legs and suction pads on the feet which stick to kitchen work surfaces.
Retro toys have also been best sellers with lots of enthusiasm for the new versions of the old favourite Swingball and the bouncing balls similar to the original Space Hoppers. Pedal cars based old models such as the Ford Model T and Comet are attracting considerable interest.
Despite concerns about the economy, parents and grandparents are still buying gifts for children and we have not seen evidence of them looking for the cheap and cheerful. Instead there seems to be a search for quality and value for money. Many of the best sellers have been priced at around £15 although some have cost over £60. The most popular though have been high quality products providing lasting value for the children.
