PRLog (Press Release) – Aug 17, 2009 – New York, NY – Showroom New York, a non profit fashion showroom, just signed on designer May Kosaka’s womenswear label Mothe as one of its residents. Showroom New York will be housing Mothe’s Fall/Winter 2009 and Spring/Summer 2010 collections. As with the other designers in the showroom, all garments are produced in New York City.

“I’m extremely excited about working with Showroom New York this coming season,” says May Kosaka, Mothe designer. “Working with this showroom is a fantastic opportunity and will be an integral part getting Mothe to the forefront of women’s fashion. Working with Samatha Bhatty, director of Showroom New York, has been great! She’s really dedicated to the concept of the showroom which is nurturing young designers in New York City.”

Mothe will also be participating in the “I Wear New York” Pop-Up shop hosted by Showroom New York. “I Wear NY” is a collective of emerging designers represented by Showroom New York. The collective works only with New York City manufacturers to produce their collections, and is committed to preserving New York’s status as a fashion capital and sustaining a viable Garment Center for future generations of Fashion Designers.

The designers will be holding a temporary Pop Up shop to sell their wares as well as buttons promoting I Wear New York. The one day store will be open on Saturday, August 23rd from 12pm – 5pm in the Lower East Side’s Orchard Street Market, between Stanton and Rivington.

About the Designer:

New York designer May Kosaka initially received a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, but her passion for art and the construction methods of garments led her to New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, where she received a degree in Fashion Design.

Kosaka’s artistic talent was recognized in 2005, when she was commissioned to design conceptual garments as part of Parthenogenesis, an art installation for the Armory Show in New York City. After the incredible response to her work by artists and the general public, she decided to introduce the same aesthetic into clothes that all women can wear for her label MOTHE.

About Showroom New York:

Showroom New York is the first of its kind in New York City. The concept of the showroom is to incubate and nurture young talent in a non profit spirit. Motivated by its mission to support apparel manufacturing in New York City, The Garment Industry Development Corporation (GIDC) launched Showroom New York in January of 2008. Showroom New York and the GIDC's efforts are contributing to ensure the Garment District will be there for the Anna Sui, Elie Tahari and Marc Jacobs of tomorrow.  One of the main requirements for submission into the showroom is manufacturing in New York. Without local apparel manufacturing, New York will cease to be one of the fashion capitals of the world.
