The English Assassin by Daniel Silva - Horror behind the Murder

PRLog (Press Release) – Aug 18, 2009 – Daniel Silva is a well-known American author, who has brilliantly contributed many thriller and espionage novels.

“The English Assassin” is a book that features an ensemble of very fascinating characters. The story is based on Switzerland's shameful WWII record of profiteering and collaboration with Nazi Germany.

As the story begins, the art restorer and occasional Israeli agent -- Gabriel Allon is sent to Zurich, Switzerland, to restore the painting of a reclusive millionaire banker, Augustus Rolfe. But he arrives to find the banker murdered and fears that his former profession will implicate him in the homicide. He flees the crime scene but is arrested as he tries to exit the country. The rank of his questioners increases until he faces Gerhardt Peterson, the second-in-command of Switzerland’s internal security department. Peterson ignores Gabriel’s assertion of innocence, accuses him for the murder of the deceased banker.

After being released and warned never to return to Switzerland, his Israeli handler reveals the true reason Allon was chosen to make contact with the banker. Rolfe was a member of a highly secret organization that had collaborated with the Nazis years ago to steal millions in valuable artwork from their occupied countries. And for some reason, just prior to his murder, Rolfe had contacted the Israelis requesting a secret meeting. As Allon begins his investigation to uncover the reason for Rolfe's phone call, the mystery takes him to a remote country house where Rolfe's daughter, Anna leads an unhappy life.

Anna Rolfe is both empathetic and mysterious, not revealing herself much, but portray the image of a woman who has been scarred by life but refuses to succumb completely. Alienated from her father, she was also lavatory to secrets that will lead her and Allon on a chilling journey through Europe and ultimately back to Switzerland to unravel the truth behind her father's final legacy. Did Allon track out the killer?
