High street shops have reported positive figures from November 2009 to the beginning of January 2010, in what some commentators are saying is a period of recovery for the UK economy.

Whilst there was much heated speculation over how Christmas spending would be affected in this financial year, many stores’ spokespeople have announced that positive growth has been established once more. Many have also said that sales will continue longer as stores enjoy a return of consumer confidence, even if it is partly due to low prices.

Marks & Spencer has reported its first underlying quarterly rise in sales in two years, whilst middle-class favourite John Lewis has experienced a 13 per cent growth in sales during December. Similarly, Ted Baker, JD Sports and Next have all revealed impressive sales increases over the December to January period, warding off worries about a disastrous 2010. With this in mind, however, many high street shops’ spokespeople have issued statements saying that they will approach 2010 with caution as consumer confidence is still not at the high levels enjoyed in the past decade.

Part of the success story of this winter’s shopping period has been the extensive sales held by many big name shops. Many cut their prices at the very beginning of December, by more than they have in previous years, in an attempt to draw customers who have been tightening their belts all year.

Online sales over Christmas experienced a massive boom and in January, internet retail shows no signs of failing. New statistics from Retail Decisions demonstrate that during the Christmas period online sales grew by a massive 21 per cent, climbing to a total spend of £49.8 billion. Over 33 million UK consumers bought products online.

As January gets under way, many stores are loath to end the sale period and are continuing their January sales for far longer than usual, hoping to extend the unexpected buoyancy of the Christmas period and ride it for as long as possible .

Whilst traditionally post-Christmas sales last only a week, a few days or even just until the end of Boxing Day, many high street retailers are maintaining low prices both in store and online. Fashion retailer Next is continuing its sale well into the first month of the year, hoping to catch January sales stragglers and sell off the last of this season’s fashions, whilst online jeweller Astley Clarke is still boasting of 70% discounts on some of its products.

Claire Patterson of online discount membership site http://www.HighStreetMax.com said:

“It has been a fantastic year for bargains, particularly online, and shoppers have demonstrated their ever-growing familiarity with web tools and their penchant for money saving to maximise on those deals.

“At HighStreetMax.com we have seen many members using our services to beat the rush when it comes to buying up products at discount prices after the Christmas season.

“Now that the Christmas sales are over, due to the state of the economy, there are still many special offers on clothes, accessories, toys, activities and much more which continue into January.

“At HighStreetMax.com, we bring our members hundreds of the very best internet discounts and special offers from a wide range of good quality, well-known brands.

“Savvy shoppers have realised that the bargain season is not over and that they have the opportunity to take advantage of that.

“What some have perhaps not realised is that they might improve their savings even further this January by using HighStreetMax.com to search for and see all of the discounts they need in one place, rather than trawling through the internet looking for individual discount codes.

“New features, such as better categorisation and a regularly updated list of the best online discounts, now enable HighStreetMax.com members to search for and locate the cheapest products much more quickly and easily.

“At HighStreetMax.com, our philosophy is ‘why pay more for equivalent value?’, and for that reason, we will be bringing our members the pick of the best value-for-money online discounts throughout 2010, and not just during January.

“That means members of HighStreetMax.com can enjoy the full benefits of a sales day every day throughout the year.”
